Palestinian Prisoners and Gilad Shalit
On June 25, 2006 Hamas terrorists encouraged, inspired and abetted by the "moderate" Hamas government staged an attack on the Israeli Defense forces inside Israel. Three soldiers were killed. Another soldier, Gilad Shalit, was kidnapped and taken to Gaza. The cross-border infiltration by Hamas "guerillas" was unprovoked for Israel had completely extricated itself from all of Gaza in August 2005. Coincidentally, this event occurred the very same weekend that Ehud Olmert pledged to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas his plan to release some Palestinian prisoners as a "good will" gesture to both the Abbas government and to the so-called "Palestinian People." When Hamas got wind of Olmert's "good will gesture" pledge to Abbas and his Fatah-led Palestinian Authority, they reacted quickly to blow this plan right out of the water! There was no way Hamas would allow Abbas any free diplomatic kudos at their expense. Thus, Hamas' most senior leaders in Damascus, Syria, in coordination with their Gaza military wing, gave the green light to their foot soldiers to launch attacks on the IDF post inside Israel Proper. The plan was to kidnap IDF soldiers in order to exchange them for the many terrorists leaders residing within Israeli jails. There are currently 10,000 Palestinian prisoner held in Israeli jails. Israel has on multiple occasions it would seriously consider releasing Arabs with no blood on their hands. It has been done in the past and most expect that, under the right conditions, it would happen again. It is important to keep in mind that all Palestinian prisoners are serving time for something. Israel is not a "gangster" or "lawless" state that imprisons people based solely on a whim. Every prisoner was charged, stood trail, convicted and properly sentenced. They were not kidnapped simply because they were Arabs. Hence, there is no justification in comparing the kidnapped Israeli soldiers and the imprisoned Arabs. There are some Arabs being held in detentions without being immediately charged. Israel special security needs mandate that the security services have a bit more leeway. For this reason, some detainees may be held for weeks or longer before being imprisoned or cleared and released.
There is a fine line between a humanitarian release of prisoners and knuckling under to unadulterated extortion. There is also a huge difference between someone with hatred in his head and he who has blood on his hands! Nobody expects that Arabs who are released will become Lovers of Zion! But those who have committed murder or collaborated in the planning of that murder should be considered an unacceptable risk. It goes beyond forgiving terrorism. It becomes an abetting in any future terrorism carried out by those released. Israel will viewed as a weak state that can be brought to its knees by extortion.

There is no doubt that Gilad Shalit needs to be unconditionally released from Gaza, Syria, Iran or from wherever he is now being held. Olmert's "good will gesture" has disaster written all over it. Appeasement didn't work with Hitler and it will not work with Hamas. "Negotiations" will not work either for over what exactly is there to negotiate? How far will Israel go to assure its own disappearance? Negotiations usually involve "give and take." Unfortunately, it seems Israel always "gives" and the Arabs always "take!"
Conclusion....
Israel is always willing 100%
of the time to negotiate and release prisoners, EXCEPT for those
prisoners that have blood on their hands, which Israel gives them
"life-sentences." Therefore the Palestinians know, that the only way
to liberate those "prisoners" with blood on their hands, that Israel
vowed NEVER to release, IS through kidnapping Israeli soldiers, in
order to force Israel into surrendering those prisoners (with blood
on their hands) through a prisoner exchange! |
